Future Cities Lab

Future Cities Lab _ ‘ Live Models

I’m happy to say that today’s guests are two friends architects Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno of Future Cities Lab.

Future Cities Lab is an experimental art and Design studio in Francisco, CA. Since 2005, founders Jason Kelly Johnson and Nataly Gattegno have collaborated on a range of cutting-edge projects exploring the intersections of art and design with public space, performance, advanced fabrication technologies, robotics, and responsive building systems.

We covered a range of topics in the conversation which include the approach to how the run and operate their practice as well as how they identify themselves along a spectrum of architecture, art, design including how they design and fabricate their work in-house from their office slash lab.

We discuss how they position much of their work as ‘live models’ and what that means for how they both produce projects for clients yet also see them as prototypes for even larger projects still to come.

Towards the end we get into a discussion of scaling up their practice and what that means regarding the technologies of fabrication and software. Thinking of how software ages, updates, requires support and needs to interface with larger ecosystems of technologies still to come.

In doing this podcast, it gives me a great opportunity to met new people and discuss their projects in writing, design etc….but it also gives me the chance to catch up with old friends and colleques and discuss their work in ways we might not do over a drink or dinner when those rare opportunities to get together occur at conferences or events…..so please enjoy.
